Drinking Water Update

Due to the continued dry conditions being experienced in regional NSW, water access on the Hume & Hovell Track may be challenging in some locations. Although there are various water sources along the Hume & Hovell Track (tanks, creeks, dams and taps), walkers may experience difficulty refilling between these points and the information below is to assist walkers prepare when heading out on the track over the coming months.

Current Conditions

  • Hot summer weather and low rainfall

  • Creeks drying up and becoming unreliable or muddied

  • Tank water not provided at all campsites

  • Drinking water may not be reliably sourced at all campsites, particularly during Summer

  • Long sections between campsites or water sources

  • Blowering Dam water storage at a low level (approximately 22% capacity as at 10 February 2026, although the water tank here was topped up on 13/02/2026)

  • A blue-green algae Red Alert frequently recurs for Mannus Lake and downstream (17 December 2025)

Safety and Treatment Tips

  •  Treat all water; water from tanks or natural sources (creeks, dams, lakes) must be treated (boiling, tablets or filters)

  • Carry at least 4-6 litres per day on long sections and during warmer months

  • Place water supplies with food drops for long-distance walkers

  • Drink regularly rather than in large, infrequent volumes to prevent dehydration, especially in hot, dry, or windy conditions
