Burrinjuck Dam - Blue Green Algae Red Alert - March 2024

On the 9th February 2024 Water NSW have advised visitors to Burrinjuck Dam that there is now a Red Alert for Blue Green Algae in the water.

UPDATE March 2024 - The Amber alert remains in place

People are advised not to enter the water, not to drink untreated water or bathe in water drawn from the dam while this red alert level warning is in place.

Warning signs have been erected at key recreational areas around the lake which will remain in place on advice from WaterNSW. Weekly sampling will be undertaken, see website for latest results: here

People who believe they may have been affected by blue-green algae are advised to seek medical advice.

Red alert levels represent 'bloom' conditions. The water may appear green and may have strong, musty or organically polluted odours. Blue-green algae may be visible as clumps or as scums. The 'blooms' should be considered to be toxic to humans and animals, and the water should not be used for drinking (without prior treatment), stock watering, or for recreation.

This issue has been exacerbated from mixed weather conditions so all waterways along the track should be assessed for algae blooms before attempting to drink or enter the water. Warm weather will cause levels to change rapidly.

Information updates about blue-green algae blooms and red level warning areas can be obtained from the Regional Algal Coordinating Committee, free-call Algal Information Hotline on 1800 999 457 or visit www.waternsw.com.au

Reminder that all drinking water along the Hume & Hovell Track must be treated with water treatment tablets or a similar purification system. If this is not available, walkers must be prepared to carry enough drinking water for their journey, this also extends to water required for cooking.
