The Hume & Hovell Track Strategic Plan

Snowy Valleys Council, in partnership with the Department of Planning and Environment – Crown Lands and Destination Riverina Murray, have been successful in obtaining funding through the Regional NSW - Business Case and Strategy Development Fund to produce a Strategic Plan for the Hume and Hovell Track.

Funding was announced in February 2023, with the Hume & Hovell Track receiving $337,000 to develop a Strategic Plan which must be completed by the 30th September 2023. To see the latest information about the project progress please see our Strategic Plan page.

The project involves the development of a comprehensive strategic plan that will focus on the long-term direction and objectives for the entire 426km of the Hume & Hovell Track. The project aims to identify development opportunities providing recommendations for infrastructure needs, land use opportunities, product development and accessibility considerations, while incorporating recognition of Indigenous history and experiences while addressing stakeholder challenges, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Great Walk of Australia. The implementation of the Plan actions will increase usage of the Hume & Hovell Track which will provide economic benefits to the communities it encompasses.

The project will undertake key activities including desk research, data analysis, extensive stakeholder consultation and engagement and site visits, leading to the development of a strategic plan.

The strategic plan aims to support all of the regional communities along the Track and facilitate the attraction of increased visitation in regional NSW through a shift into track highlight experiences, short walk visitation and overnight stays, which will provide significant economic and social benefits to the surrounding communities. It will also identify economic and development opportunities relevant to each region, which has an associated township aligning with each section of the Track.
